Microgrids
The nature of electricity distribution networks is evolving rapidly with the implementation of distributed energy resources both behind and in front of the customer meter point. Distributors are now on a steep learning curve to understand the challenges faced from increased solar penetration and the unpredictable effects of climate change. Our team members have led the development of a number commercial solutions for initiatives for asset owners that has required close collaboration with developers, investors, retailers and regulators. There are a range of critical infrastructure security risks involved in the operation of suppliers’ standard BESS systems which places additional compliance constraints on planned initiatives. Our team has orchestrated commercial solutions to ensure project delivery schedules (supporting network need) are met while operational compliance is being formalised through regulatory processes. Implementation of these commercial solutions has been critical to ensuring that distribution companies participate, learn and grow in establishment of future networks for the benefit of customers and community.
DEmand Management
We have worked on a number of procurement projects where technology will shape and transform operation and management of the distribution network that ultimately benefit the customer. One example of this is where the Distributor partnered with Metering Providers and Retailers to implement smart meters to establish an alternative means of controlling customers hot water systems. Smart meters also provide short interval data enabling an enriched view of network load profile at various times of day and year informing future decisions around design for network reliability where energy from a distributed source becomes the dominant form. Working with a number of vendors, platforms have been established which, with customers’ consent, allow control of household equipment. The vendor platforms aggregate and orchestrate customer generation to address network constraints as they arise and return value to the community. Front of mind was to ensure compliance with privacy laws. Vendors' ability to access data has been controlled strictly in line with the companies operating license conditions.
Vegetation control
From a business-as-usual perspective, the team has played no small part in the defence of the network against climate change as evidenced through the pre-summer bushfire inspection program which had a significant influence in maintaining operations during the 2019 summer bushfire disasters experienced in New South Wales. The asset owners' Strategic Partners, collectively perform inspection, analysis and maintenance services to ensure the network overhead assets are clear of vegetation and remain able to supply electricity safely and reliably. Working closely with suppliers and business stakeholders we embedded new systems and processes which resulted in a smoother flow of data (business to business), improved quality and timeliness of delivery which has significantly reduced compliance risk on the entire asset maintenance program. Working with our Data Insights business partners we established improvements to data collection, analysis and decision processes to benefit the company and community from a risk and cost management perspective which have been secured through commercial frameworks.
